Montreal’s Mid-Summer Music Bash Plays Jean Drapeau Park Aug. 1 & 2

The 2009 edition of the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival features some 50 musical acts on four outdoor stages. Artistic director Nick Farkas says indie bands deserve a special place on the Osheaga stage.
“We like to give exposure to up and coming acts. We like to them a chance.”
Farkas says this year be on the lookout for Parlovr, Ladies of the Canyon, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Arkells, and Winter Gloves.
“We’re really excited about these bands,” Farkas said. “But what excites us the most is having people discover a new act.”
Osheaga 2009 Aug. 1 Line-Up
- Coldplay offers their Brit brand of Viva la Vida pop (River stage, 9:15 p.m.)
- Jason Mraz is as smooth vocally and acoustically as can get (River stage, 6:30 p.m.)
- The Roots provide energetic modern soul funk (Mountain stage, 7:30 p.m.)
- Girl Talk gives electronic mashup guy power edge (MEG stage, 9:30 p.m.)
- The Stills provide post-punk for the masses (MEG stage, 6:15 p.m.)
- Eagles of Death Metal supply solid gold sweat power (River stage, 4:45 p.m.)
- Lykke Li serves up a Swedish dish of indie rock and pop (MEG stage, 7:45 p.m.)
- Elbow provides progressive Britppop (Mountain stage, 5:30 p.m.)
- Josh Ritter offers acoustic folk rock (River stage, 3:15 p.m.)
- The Rural Alberta Advantage plays ethereal Canadian indie rock (Tree stage, 7 p.m.)
- Donavon Frankenreiter performs insightful anthems with a surfer’s sensibilities (Mountain stage, 2:30 p.m.)
- Woodhands provide a playful techno tapestry (Tree stage, 10:15 p.m.)

- Beast offers a dose of electronic trip rock (River stage, 3:15 p.m.)
- The Ting Tings sing catchy Brit pop (Mountain stage, 4 p.m.)
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs perform pertinent art punk (River stage, 4:45 p.m.)
- Tiga remixes hypnotic electro acid trash (MEG stage, 7:45 p.m.)
- Arkells play alternative rock anthems (Tree stage, 5 p.m.)
- Hollerado provides tongue-in-cheek indie testimonials (Tree stage, 10:15 p.m.)
- Crystal Castles play experimental electronica (MEG stage, 9:45 p.m.)
- Rounding out the bill: Hey Rosetta!, Heartless Bastards, Ladies of the Canyon, Amazing Baby, and more.
Beastie Boys Cancel
The Beastie Boys canceled their Osheaga appearance and remaining 2009 summer concert dates due to bandmember Adam Yauch's recent cancer diagnosis. Yauch will undergo surgery and begin treatment soon for a cancerous tumor found in his salivary gland. A full recovery is expected. Osheaga officials are comtemplating a replacement.
Osheaga Ticket Info
- Osheaga takes place Aug. 1 and 2 at Jean Drapeau Park.
- General admission single-day tickets cost $75.
- The two-day pass costs $125 (prices in Canadian dollars).
- Order tickets through Gillett Entertainment Group.
- The easiest way to get to Osheaga is by public transportation — Metro station Jean Drapeau. leaves you steps from the main entrance.
- Doors open at 1 p.m.
- The music starts at 2 p.m. and continues until around 11 p.m.
- Big backpacks and professional camera equipment prohibited.
- Food kiosks are available on site but bringing food is permitted.
Osheaga in the City
New this year, the Osheaga in the City kick-off concert series takes place at area venues in Montreal July 28 through 31. You need a separate ticket for these shows. Here’s who’s on the bill.
The Veils, Foreign Born, and Faces on Film play Sala Rossa July 28. Tickets cost $15. Priestess plays a free show at Foufounes Electriques July 29. This is first come, first served.
Omnikrom and Mister Valaire play Olympia Theatre July 30. Tickets cost $15.
Think About Life plays Le National July 31. Tickets cost $15.
Osheaga also teams up once again for the 11th edition of MEG Montreal, which enjoy their own stage at Osheaga and also present acts at downtown clubs July 30 through Aug. 2. The emphasis here is on Montreal’s premier indie bands.
