How to Get to Canada’s Second Largest City

As one of North America's most exciting and accessible cities, travelling to Montreal depends solely on how you wish to get there: by car, plane, bus or train.

Getting to Montreal by Car

From Toronto, head east on the 401 until it changes into Autoroute (Highway) 20 east. Continue east until you arrive at Autoroute Ville-Marie, then head towards Avenue de Lorimier/ Avenue Papineau and Pont Jacques-Cartier Bridge. You are now entering the downtown core. Turn left at AUT-720 O. Travel distance 338 miles / 545 km.

From Quebec City, head southwest on Autoroute 20 O, also known as the Autoroute Transcanadienne Ouest or the TransCanada Highway. Travel 144 miles / 233 km until you see signs for Pont Jacques-Cartier in Montreal.

From New York City take exit 24 to merge onto I-87 N/I-90 E towards Albany/Montreal. Continue onto AUT-15 N and then take exit 53 toward Pont Champlain/AUT-10/Québec/Québec O/Sherbrooke/AUT-15 N/Montréal. Total distance 382 m / 614 km.

Getting to Montreal by Air

Previously known as Dorval Airport, Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (975 Roméo-Vachon blvd. Nord, Dorval. 514/394-7377) serves the city with connecting flights across Canada and the world. Located west of the city, you need to take a taxi (fixed price $35 between the airport and downtown) to travel the 14 miles / 22 km.

If you have time and your flight fits the schedule, hop on a La Québécoise shuttle bus (514/842-2281). Fares cost $13 one way or $22.75 round trip and conveniently leave every 20 minutes between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. Shuttles pick up and drop off at the downtown train station and most major hotels.

Getting to Montreal by Bus

Orléans Express (514/395-4000 ) regularly runs between Montreal and most cities and towns across the province. All buses arrive and depart from the convenient downtown bus station, Station Centrale d'Autobus Montréal (505 blvd.de Maisonneuve Est, Quartier Latin. 514/842-2281) and connects with the Berri-UQAM Métro (subway) station.

Greyhound Buses (800/231-2222; 800/661-8747 in Canada) travel to Montreal from Ontario and New York and arrive and depart from the Station Centrale d'Autobus Montréal.

Getting to Montreal by Train

In Canada, Via Rail (514/989-2626 or 888/842-7245) connects Montréal with all other major cities from Halifax to Vancouver including Quebec City and Toronto. If you’re travelling from New York, the Amtrak Adirondack (800/872-7245) leaves Penn Station every morning.
