L'Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy has style, service, location and air conditioning. Montreal's best accommodation, at a moderate price.

Editors Choice

L'Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy in Old Montreal offers excellent service, decor and location at a mid-range price. Air conditioning, non-smoking rooms, complete hot breakfast and helpful tour advice are just the basics at this exquisite auberge.

The remarkable thing about this B&B is the atmosphere. Although located on busy Rue St. Paul, the building exudes a feeling of serenity, one that envelops travelers instantly upon arrival, and remains with them long after departure.

History of the Auberge

The 3-storey building, built in 1723, was originally a warehouse. Mortared stone walls, over a foot thick, wood ceiling beams and plank floors, creative lighting and thoughtful accents enchant travelers during their stay. The lobby serves as an art gallery hosting up-and-coming Quebecois artists.

The Rooms

The rooms feel European with their French windows, painted doors, exposed rock or brick walls, dark wood antique furniture and Oriental rugs. Sweet slumber is aided by the dreamy French country decor and the faint sound of horses hooves clopping along the cobblestones along Rue St. Paul.

Some rooms boast jacuzzi tubs or faux fireplaces, and all are smoke-free with wi-fi access and air conditioning. Room rates start around $130 CDN in low season and peak around $215 CDN in high-season. (Contact auberge directly for current rates).

The Hosts and Hospitality

A good host is hard to find, but the auberge's Martin and Mikhail are fabulous at their jobs. They speak both French and English fluently, cook delicious breakfasts, can make small (or large) talk on infinite topics and can give insightfully appropriate tour recommendations after having spoken to someone for only a few minutes.

The breakfast, served downstairs amidst bright colors, a beautiful faux window, and fragrant coffee, satisfies the appetite as well as the soul. Coffee, tea, juice, fresh croissants, fruit, omelettes made to order, yogurt, french toast -- the selections vary but all impress -- served amidst the friendly banter of Martin or Mikhail.

Proximity to Transit, Restaurants, Attractions

A few short blocks to Olive et Gourmando and countless other cafes and restaurants, galleries, tourist shops, and historic sites such as Riopelle's La Joute, Notre Dame, Musée Marc-Aurele Fortin, and the waterfront and old port. The auberge is a leisurely 10-minute walk from Place d'Armes subway station.

Book early -- the secret's out, and the auberge has many repeat customers, some of whom book a year in advance.
